I am by no way experienced and even less educated as it comes to meditation. My way however is this: Some music you like, _without_ understandable text, this will mask the other enviromental sounds. Sit on a chair or on the floor, back straight, close the eyes. Wait. You'll most likely notice some thoughts coming up, rather confused ones, don't follow them, that is if you for example start to think about some thing harder, concentrate either on the music or on the red color your eyes percieve if closed. Wait some more. Maybe something important comes up, then think it through fully, else it won't go away. Wait even more. Try to eliminate the music from your consciousness by imagining a point in empty space and concentrating on this. Stop thinking about the point and the space, don't relisten to the music. Wait some more. Think about the world and stuff.
