Some of you might be wondering what a concordance is. When used for the Dao De Jing, a concordance is a list of all the chapters in which any specific Chinese character that was used appears. So, if you wanted to find out which chapters contained the character Dao or a compound character like WuWei, you could look the character up in a concordance and find the chapter numbers (and position numbers) for it. It's a very handy tool! You might be wondering WHY you'd be interested in using a concordance if you have no interest in learning the Chinese language? 1- You might see a certain English word used in a couple chapters of the Dao De Jing (like "Uncarved Block", spontaneity, emptiness or heaven), and wonder where else in the text it's been used. Or maybe you want to look up all the times Dao is used. A concordance allows you to find that information in a few seconds. 2- You might remember a certain phrase or word that's used in the Dao De Jing, but you can't remember which chapter it was. "Which chapter was it that refered to 'not looking out the window'?" Then you'd have to pick up your copy of the DDJ and search for it, right? Well, if you use a concordance, all you have to do is find out the Chinese word (PinYin spelling) for one of the prominent words (like "window") - and there it is! | BY: Nina | Guodian Laozi | DDJ Concordance | Comparisons | Who was Laozi | | Return Home | Laozi's Dao De Jing | Zhuangzi (Chuang Tzu) | Links | Dao (Tao) is Open Forum | Book List | Other Stuff | |
