CONFUCIUS and MENCIUS |
Although there were many philosophers in ancient China at approximately the same time in history as Laozi and Zhuangzi (give or take a couple hundred years :-) ), Confucius is the one person that most people think about as the most well-known and proficient philosopher of his times. Confucianism was adopted and followed as both a philosophy and political ideal throughout Chinese history. In the West, people might think of the “Confucius Says....” jokes. Those one-liners probably came into existence because the best known writings of the Confucian ideal is The Analects, which consists of many wise sayings attributed to Confucius. Confucius never actually wrote a book, but The Analects was compiled many years after his death by his disciples. Confucius spent many years delving into the mystery of the Yi Jing (I Ching) and wrote the commentaries to the Yi Jing that are used and translated today in an effort to decipher what the Yi Jing actually means. Mencius is not as well known as Confucius, but he based his concepts on those of his predecessor (Confucius). Mencius tried to explain more thoroughly what Confucius was saying, and in the process came up with some of his own philosophies. --------- The following is only a list of books in my library.
